    Contact: Joseph Rodio   413-538-5045   jrodio@cwmars.org
The library's Book Club will meet to discuss Greg Mortenson's book Three Cups of Tea.

A brief summary: In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed attempt to ascend K2, an American climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan’s Karakoram Himalaya. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time—Greg Mortenson’s one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban. Award-winning journalist David Oliver Relin has collaborated on this spellbinding account of Mortenson’s incredible accomplishments in a region where Americans are often feared and hated. In pursuit of his goal, Mortenson has survived kidnapping, fatwas issued by enraged mullahs, repeated death threats, and wrenching separations from his wife and children. But his success speaks for itself. At last count, his Central Asia Institute had built fifty-five schools. Three Cups of Tea is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world—one school at a time.

An author talk and books signing by Durham Caldwell.

Author Durham Caldwell has invented the Massachusetts town of Riverbridge. But he’s populated it with familiar characters, and the events they grapple with are right out of yesterday’s headlines: the Goldwater movement, the upheaval caused by urban renewal, protests over the Vietnam War that bring fisticuffs between opposing sides, a sit-down led by a college president, friction between police and the black community, civil rights vigils, and the decade-long fight to end de facto segregation in inner-city schools. Caldwell knows his Massachusetts politics and politicians. He’s covered them for broadcast and print outlets for more than half a century. His book’s central figure, TV newsman Buzz Buckley, has to cope not only with the competition but also with the moral myopia of a station owner aligned with the city’s big shots and the distractions of a rollicking, Rabelaisian romance with an old high school sweetheart and a growing fondness for his politically ambitious city councilor daughter-in-law.

    Contact: Joseph Rodio   413-538-5045   jrodio@cwmars.org
Getting Past Fear: How to Overcome Adversity and Achieve Your Goals The greatest obstacle to success is giving in to fear. Fear can create a “freeze” response, which keeps us from recognizing options and taking the actions that will ultimately lead to success. This workshop will empower participants to overcome their fears and take simple but powerful steps that will lead them towards a new, better future even in today’s tough economic times. Participants will learn how to:

Explore ways to take positive actions towards success.

Use simple techniques to increase adaptability and resiliency.

Create a “success support system”.

Create a motivating and inspiring personal vision statement.

All participants will receive an action planner and the booklet “Seven Keys to Success” with powerful principles for overcoming adversity and achieving their dreams. Click to visit Doug Foresta's website.
