Introducing a new free early literacy program which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she begins kindergarten!
The program entails reading any book to your newborn, infant and/or toddler before they start kindergarten. It may sound hard to do, but it really is not! If you read just one book a night together, you will have read 365 books in a year! That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years! There are no restrictions as to which book you read or how many times you read it! It can include books read to your child by a teacher, a sibling, or during Story Time. Each experience counts as a book read!

The reality is, if you do not take charge of your aging, someone else will. When you look into the future, say 15 years, do you sometimes feel a little nervous? You have a great many things planned, but there may be some “what ifs.” In this class, Sarah Batzer, will walk members through an individual, realistic workbook, provided, that will create a plan for the future and the “what ifs.” If the need arises you will be able to find the solutions you have already chosen—not the ones chosen for you. This is not a financial class. We cover housing, transportation, meals, medications, bill paying and how to share your plan with family or a loved one
Sarah Batzer earned a master’s in gerontology from The University of Missouri, St. Louis, and has been active in the field of aging for more than 25 years, through teaching, consulting and design.
The cost of the workbook is $5.

Hey Tecumseh Teens! Join us for snacks and conversation as we discuss this month's title, Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson.
“Hope is the thing with feathers” starts the poem Frannie is reading in school. Frannie hasn’t thought much about hope. There are so many other things to think about. Each day, her friend Samantha seems a bit more “holy.” There is a new boy in class everyone is calling the Jesus Boy. And although the new boy looks like a white kid, he says he’s not white. Who is he? During a winter full of surprises, good and bad, Frannie starts seeing a lot of things in a new light—her brother Sean’s deafness, her mother’s fear, the class bully’s anger, her best friend’s faith and her own desire for “the thing with feathers.”

We live in a complex, challenging, confusing, and sometimes chaotic world. It is no wonder we all experience disappointment, discouragement, defeat, depression, or despair at times. How are we supposed to handle these negative emotions? Is suicide ever justified? Author Marti Scott, whose brother took his own life, will discuss how suicide impacted her life. In addition, Scott, author of Suicide – The Biblical View: How to Biblically Handle Disappointment, Discouragement, Defeat, Depression and Despair, will offer practical help for those who have concluded that suicide is not the answer to their struggles.
Marti Scott received a BS with a group major in English language and literature and a minor in speech and drama. In addition to various office jobs, she taught English at a Christian school and substitute taught for several years. Marti has years of experience singing in churches and directing adult and children's choirs. She also enjoys decorating her home, sewing, and crafting. Marti and her husband Jeff have been married for 52 years and have two children and seven grandchildren. They live in Michigan where they are active church members.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
After several years working as a sports editor in Juneau, Alaska, Jim DuFresne spent the winter of 1981 in New Zealand backpacking and wrote his first book, Tramping in New Zealand, for Lonely Planet. He followed up with Lonely Planet’s Alaska travel guidebook and then returned to Michigan to write Isle Royale National Park: Foot Trails & Water Routes.
That guide to the wilderness areas of Isle Royale, known at the park as the “backpacker’s bible,” is in its 40th year of continuous publication in various editions.
Having reached that amazing milestone, DuFresne decided to wrap up his career, with a presentation entitled "The End of the Trail: A Life Well Spent Walking in the Woods and Sleeping on the Ground." The hour-long PowerPoint presentation highlights the best wilderness adventures of his long career, taking the audience into the wilds of New Zealand, Alaska, and of course Isle Royale.
Among DuFresne’s more than 20 published titles are Backpacking in Michigan and 12 Classic Trout Streams in Michigan: A Handbook for Fly Anglers (University of Michigan Press), The Trails of M-22 and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (MichiganTrailMaps.com) and 50 Hikes In Michigan (Backcountry Publications).
Copies of the books will be available for purchase and signing.

Hey Tecumseh Teens! Join us for snacks and conversation as we discuss this month's title, I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys.
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe. Cristian risks everything to unmask the truth behind the regime, give voice to fellow Romanians, and expose to the world what is happening in his country. He eagerly joins the revolution to fight for change when the time arrives. But what is the cost of freedom?

Travelling through the heart of Europe by way of its Danube, Main, and Rhine River arteries is an education in cultural anatomy. This 2016 river cruise with world traveler George Jabol starts with proud and beautiful Budapest. Not far upstream lies romantic Vienna, displaying elegant architecture and one of the world’s richest musical heritages. The journey passes through a dozen historic settings, replete with legends and charm, such as the abbey at Melk and cities like Regensburg, Koblenz and Cologne, and includes a stop to explore authentic Dutch windmills at Kinderdijk. At the northern end of this journey is vibrant Amsterdam, the city of canals, flowers, and the art of Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
George Jabol received his B.A. degree from Muskingum College in Ohio, and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan. Fully retired now from a career with the federal government, George creates photographic slide shows as a way to remember his travels and share them with others.

The laundry line? What’s there to talk about? Clothesline historian and hobbyist Anne Lawrence will take you on a nostalgic trip back in time to the days when everyone hung their wash on the line to dry – when they went online without the internet! There will be memories to share, links between the clothesline and social/cultural issues, history, feminism, psychology, sociology, and ecology. You will hear why “solar drying” – that wonderful free sun – is once again the way to go in today’s eco-conscious world. There will be personal stories, delightful slides to see, along with a peek at Lawrence’s vast collection of laundry memorabilia. We may end up with a laundry list of things to think about, but she won’t leave us hanging while airing her thoughts. She will pin things down for us, and try to remove any hang-ups we may have about using the clothesline. So, come join us and let’s hang out together!
Anne Lawrence is an alumna of Tufts University in psychology and education. She enjoyed a 20-year career in university administration at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Since retiring and relocating to Ann Arbor 13 years ago, she has been happily sharing her hobby with people all over the area.
Much of what we know about Roman daily life comes to us not from the city of Rome, but from Pompeii and other cities in the Bay of Naples which were buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. Cities were buried under more than 20 feet of stone and ash, which helped to preserve a literal snapshot of what was happening right before the eruption. What is your daily routine? Wake up, eat breakfast, brush teeth, work, exercise, come home, eat dinner, and bed? Sounds about right, with some variation in there? Do you think the ancient Romans had a different daily routine – or was it the same? Join the University of Michigan’s Kelsey Museum of Archaeology on Zoom as we discover what a day in the life of a citizen of ancient Rome was like, based on evidence gathered from the ruins of Pompeii.

Which of these should you believe and which should you doubt? Old people aren’t interested in sex. Money can’t buy happiness. You can believe media reports of medical breakthroughs. Lie detectors work. We only use 10% of our brains. ESP is real. Some people are born gay. Hypnosis is powerful. We repress bad memories. Examine these and more with Dr. Gordon Hammerle, adjunct professor at Siena Heights University and professor emeritus at Adrian College, and there may be some surprising answers.

Hey Tecumseh Teens! Join us for snacks and conversation as we discuss this month's title, The Witch's Boy by Kelly Barnhill.
When Ned and his identical twin brother tumble from their raft into a raging river, only Ned survives. Villagers are convinced the wrong boy lived. Across the forest that borders Ned’s village, Áine, the daughter of the Bandit King, is haunted by her mother’s last words: “The wrong boy will save your life, and you will save his.” When the Bandit King comes to steal the magic Ned’s mother, a witch, is meant to protect, Áine and Ned meet. Can they trust each other long enough to cross a dangerous enchanted forest and stop the war about to boil over between their two kingdoms? Author Kelly Barnhill is a Newbery Award-winning author.

We will take a pictorial tour along the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, exploring several cities along the way with their historic buildings and vineyards with world traveler Dr. Andy Jorgensen. We begin in Basel visiting a quaint pharmaceutical museum which includes a replica of an alchemist’s laboratory. The city boasts many other important venues, such the 17th century Kunstmuseum, which is the first publicly available museum for art in the world. Another stop is Strasbourg with its timber-framed homes and businesses, including Reisling wineries. The nationality of this town depended upon which country won the last war, Germany or France, so it is quite multicultural. A long stretch of the river includes dozens of castles, some decaying and others thriving. A high point will be a visit to the striking Gothic cathedral in Cologne. Touring this area would not be complete without peeking into a working Dutch windmill. These massive structures pump water to prevent flooding in much of the country.
Dr. Jorgensen is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toledo. He has spent considerable time living and studying in Europe over the past several decades.

Few periods of United States history are more important and less understood than the years leading to the Civil War. That is particularly true of the Underground Railroad. The origin of the term is unclear; a slavecatcher is believed to have uttered the phrase “the slaves disappeared, like they had boarded a railway underground.” The proximity to Canada via the Detroit River put Michigan on the map of Underground Railroad routes. Washtenaw County was the next to the last stop before arriving at the river. For many, it was the most dangerous point of the journey, since the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 made it a crime to harbor “runaways.” Join us as we follow one family’s story with historian Rochelle Balkam.
Balkam taught history and government at Ypsilanti High School for 36 years, and taught Michigan history at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) for 27 years. She holds an M.A. degree in history and an M.S. in historic preservation from EMU. Rochelle serves on the board of the Michigan One-Room Schoolhouse Association, and formerly served on the board of the Historical Society of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Historic Commission.

The most popular doll on the planet, Barbie, is still going strong after 65 years! Barbie has proven she still creates social buzz with the “pink summer” surrounding the 2023 release of her first live-action movie. Along the way she has significantly impacted social values in pop culture by modeling female independence, has been the subject of social controversy, run for U.S. President six times, literally travelled into space twice – AND has done it all looking great, in the latest fashions. Not bad, given that everyone except her creator was sure she would be a failure from the start. Mattel reports that there is a Barbie sold somewhere in the world every second. Millions of girls own and play with Barbies, and she has hundreds of thousands of collectors around the world. Perhaps you played with Barbie or are a collector yourself. Plan to share your thoughts about Barbie during our time together; join Barbie enthusiast Mary Bondarenko and other class members in going down memory lane with this toy icon.

A trip to Iceland has long been on world traveler George Jabol’s bucket list. Although covering only six days, this 2023 journey proved long on extraordinary scenic beauty. The trip began with a comprehensive city tour of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, which included visits to the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church and the Northern Lights Center, followed by an evening search for the mysterious swirling and dancing Aurora Borealis. A unique adventure followed with a visit to the Blue Lagoon, a natural pool of mineral-rich geothermal water set in the middle of a lava field in the Icelandic wilderness. A full day’s tour called the Golden Circle showcased the Thingvelir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site located where the European and North American tectonic plates meet. Another tour visited the southern coast of Iceland where there is a black sand coastline, the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and other stunning scenery. This active, long-awaited trip kept Jabol’s camera exceedingly busy and was truly the fulfillment of a dream.
Jabol received his B.A. degree from Muskingum College in Ohio, and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan. Fully retired now from a career with the federal government, George creates photographic slide shows as a way to remember his travels and share them with others.

The Michigan militia movement began in the late 1970s, and foreshadowed the growth of the movement nationwide. As an FBI agent in Michigan, Greg Stejskal had extensive involvement with Mark Koernke, “Mark from Michigan,” one of the founders of the movement. Later Stejskal was involved in the investigation of the Oklahoma City bombing, which had a substantial Michigan connection. In this class, we will discuss these events, and how extreme elements of the militia movement have become a domestic threat, with their involvement in a plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan, and the January 6, 2023, insurrection at the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C.
Greg Stejskal is a retired special agent of the FBI having served from 1975-2006. He has also written a book, FBI Case Files Michigan – Tales of a G-Man, chronicling some of the cases in which he was involved during his career, some involving the Michigan militia.
