New Voices Book Discussion
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Title for discussion is "Jack" by Marilynne Robinson.

Jack  tells the story of John Ames Boughton, the beloved, erratic, and grieved-over prodigal son of a Presbyterian minister in Gilead, Iowa. In segregated St. Louis sometime after World War II, Jack falls in love with Della Miles, an African American high school teacher who is also the daughter of a preacher―discerning, generous, and independent. Their fraught, beautiful romance is one of Robinson’s greatest achievements.

The Gilead novels are about the dilemmas and promise of American history―about the ongoing legacy of the Civil War and the enduring impact of both racial inequality and deep-rooted religious belief. They touch the deepest chords in our national character and resonate with our deepest feelings.

ONLINE: Positively Healthy Holiday
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Nothing can undermine our healthy intentions like the holiday season. Every year we enter this period vowing to keep our portions small and our gym membership active, but it isn’t long before the holiday cheer begins to build, free time wanes, and our healthy routines are replaced with cookies and eggnog.
Join representatives from the HeLP to learn a few realistic, positive changes to help keep us in optimal health during this season of excess.

The Stony Brook Medicine Healthy Libraries Program (HeLP) is a partnership between the Public Libraries of Suffolk County, a unique group of healthcare professionals and graduate student interns from the fields of social work, public health, nursing, nutrition and library science, working together to provide access to both in-person and virtual healthcare related resources for public library patrons throughout Suffolk County. This partnership looks to enhance the health and well-being of Suffolk County residents through library programming, collection development and dissemination of information on current health topics impacting our communities.

Join us for a  continuous showing of the Traveling Lantern Theater Company’s virtual performance of The Story of Ebenezer Scrooge or "A Christmas Carol", the classic tale of a miser’s redemption. Ebenezer Scrooge is a nasty, mean, snarling old geezer with no care for anything other than his money. His one and only friend visits him as a ghost, and starts him on a journey that melts his icy heart and teaches him the joys of caring for, and giving to others. Registration is not required.
