The Lessons of Rome
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Jon Michael Schwarting, architect, urban designer and professor, analyzes transformations in Rome over centuries as a lesson for contemporary urban designers and all those interested in why Rome is so wonderful. Studying both large scale interventions in the city and the influence of urban conditions on individual renaissance and baroque buildings, JMS argues the importance of context as a positive force in design and why the different styles and periods seem to fit together so seamlessly. The study started during Schwarting’s Rome Prize stay at the American Academy in Rome, continued through his directing a summer Rome program at Columbia University and continues by him taking students to Rome to learn its lessons. JMS is the author of Rome: Urban Formation and Transformation, which will be available for purchase and signing.
