Join the Lyme Library Stitchcraft Club and practice your stitch craft in the company of like-minded stitchers. If you enjoy, knitting, embroidery, crochet, cross stitch, quilting or any other form of easily portable hand crafts join us on the 4th Saturday of each month at the Lyme library in the Periodicals Room to share your projects, good company and refreshments around the fireplace. This is the perfect opportunity to learn and expand your creativity by sharing with others.

The Lyme Library American Mah Jongg Club

Mahjong Doesn't Need to Be Updated for White People | Teen Vogue

Every last Tuesday of the month is the  meeting of the Lyme Library American Mah Jongg Club. Previous experience playing Mah Jongg is preferred. The library has two complete American Mah Jongg sets and 8 copies of the “Official Standard Hands and Rules 2023” booklets that participants can use while in the building. With the limited supply of American Mah Jongg sets available via the library if you have your own set of tiles you are encouraged to bring them along. Come join the fun and meet new friends.

Judy Cotton Art Exhibit

Local artist Judy Cotton presents solo exhibit at Lyman AllynRecent Shows - JudyCotton

 

Internationally-known artist Judy Cotton will be exhibiting her paitings at the Lyme Library for April 1st to June 1st. An artist reception and author reading will take place on April 6th. Refreshments will be provided.

Ms. Cotton's paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea and China. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Phillips Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Lyman Allyn Museum and the Florence Griswold Museum, the Bathurst Regional Gallery and numerous private collections.

A resident of Lyme, Ms. Cotton was the New York Contributing Editor of Vogue Australia, covering the New York art scene and writing profiles and interviews with such important cultural figures as Tennessee Williams and Oliver Sacks.

The Lyme Library is honored to be able to display her work and benefit from her generosity.

Refreshments (coffee, tea and pastries) have been provided by volunteers and members of the Lyme Library Board and Friends of the Lyme Public Library. All items are free, but feel free to add to the "donation jar". "The Sweet Spot" provides games, magazines, newspapers and a warm and cozy space for folks to meet up and enjoy meeting old friends and making new ones. Come join the fun and learn more about what the library has to offer the community.

Award winning screenwriter Janet Roach will be leading a Sunday afternoon film series at the Lyme Library running from January through April on the first and third Sundays of each month. She is calling the series “Around the World in Eight Movies” and the series will be featuring memorable international films you won’t want to miss. Join friends and family and make new acquaintances while armchair traveling around the globe via the breathtaking wonder of film.

“Breaker Morant”, is the film adaptation of the 1902 court marital, of Australian lieutenants Harry “Breaker” Morant, Peter Handcock and George Wilton, who served in the British army during the Second Anglo-Boer War. This court martial is one of the first war crime prosecutions in British military history.

 Come join the fun and meet new and old friends at the Lyme Library puzzle club.The meetings will take place every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 11:00am-12:30pm. Puzzles will be provided by the library. A range of puzzles will be available from 40 piece ones to 1,000 piece varieties. The library will also provide a puzzle case so that puzzles which the club is working on that were not able to be finished in one sitting can continue to be worked on at the next meeting. Celebrating National Poetry Month with CT River Poets

Celebrate National Poetry Month with Cleveland Public Library and Ohio  Center for the Book | #NationalPoetryMonth 2022 – Cleveland Public Library

April is National Poetry Month and the Lyme Library will be hosting members of the Connecticut River Poets, a collective of poets from the Connecticut River Valley area. Join us for an afternoon of poetry as we celebrate the beauty and power of the spoken word.

Pat Barone, Poet Laureate Emeritus of Clinton, is the author of Along the Marsh Still Greening.

Mary Guitar of Lyme, has published poems in journals and anthologies, including Waking Up to the Earth.

Sara Ingram of Deep River, is the author of Sounds of House and Wood.

Nan Meneely of Guilford, is the author of Letter from Italy, 1944 and Simple Absence.

Lana Orphanides of Groton, is the author of Searching for Angels.

Lorraine Riess, Poet Laureate of Haddam, is the author of Still Life With Wings.

Books will be available for purchase.

The club will be alternating the location of the meetings between the Lyme Public Library at 482 Hamburg Road in Lyme and the Lyme's Senior Center at 26 Town Woods Road, Old Lyme. 10 Tips to Manage Stress with Dr. Wendy Hurwitz (AT THE OLD LYME LIBRARY)

 How to reduce stress: 6 steps to manage stress - Medvisit

Up to 90% of all visits to doctors’ offices are stress-related, according to Harvard.  Stress can be considered as much a risk factor for disease as smoking. Why can two people be in the same situation and respond to stress in different ways?

Can changing the way we carry stress be a learnable skill?

 Come and learn the difference between good and bad stress, increase awareness of how stress impacts the body, and hear about the emerging pattern matching specific symptoms and diseases with specific stresses. 

 Everyone will learn a technique to minimize stress and maximize vitality.

About Dr. Wendy:

A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Hurwitz is a nationally recognized expert on stress. A former medical researcher for ABC News, Dr. Hurwitz is an expert in two fields: Mind/Body Medicine and Energy Medicine. She teaches both professionals and students in medicine, psychology, and the allied health professions, and has lectured at Harvard Medical School, Yale University School of Medicine, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, NYU, and Fordham University.

Award winning screenwriter Janet Roach will be leading a Sunday afternoon film series at the Lyme Library running from January through April on the first and third Sundays of each month. She is calling the series “Around the World in Eight Movies” and the series will be featuring memorable international films you won’t want to miss. Every last Tuesday of the month is the  meeting of the Lyme Library American Mah Jongg Club. Previous experience playing Mah Jongg is preferred. The library has two complete American Mah Jongg sets and 8 copies of the “Official Standard Hands and Rules 2023” booklets that participants can use while in the building. With the limited supply of American Mah Jongg sets available via the library if you have your own set of tiles you are encouraged to bring them along. Come join the fun and meet new friends.

 Come join the fun and meet new and old friends at the Lyme Library puzzle club.The meetings will take place every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 11:00am-12:30pm. Puzzles will be provided by the library. A range of puzzles will be available from 40 piece ones to 1,000 piece varieties. The library will also provide a puzzle case so that puzzles which the club is working on that were not able to be finished in one sitting can continue to be worked on at the next meeting.
