Booked for Lunch

Siracusa
Siracusa, by Delia Ephron

An electrifying novel about marriage and deceit from bestselling author Delia Ephron that follows two couples on vacation in Siracusa, a town on the coast of Sicily, where the secrets they have hidden from each other are exposed and relationships are unraveled. New Yorkers Michael, a famous writer, and Lizzie, a journalist, travel to Italy with their friends from Maine--Finn, his wife Taylor, and their daughter Snow."From the beginning," says Taylor, "it was a conspiracy for Lizzie and Finn to be together." Told Rashomon-style in alternating points of view, the characters expose and stumble upon lies and infidelities past and present. Snow, ten years old and precociously drawn into a far more adult drama, becomes the catalyst for catastrophe as the novel explores collusion and betrayal in marriage. With her inimitable psychological astuteness, and uncanny understanding of the human heart, Ephron delivers a powerful meditation on marriage, friendship, and the meaning of travel. Set on the sun-drenched coast of the Ionian Sea, Siracusa unfolds with the pacing of a psychological thriller and delivers an unexpected final act that none can see coming. The Booked for Lunch discussion group is held in the Brooks Room of the library and is facilitated by Library Director, Karen Demers.
Copies of the books are held at the Service Desk.

Booked for Lunch

The Dutch House
The Dutch House, by Ann Patchett

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Cyril's son Danny and his older sister Maeve are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. The Booked for Lunch discussion group is held in the Brooks Room of the library and is facilitated by Library Director, Karen Demers.
Copies of the books are held at the Service Desk.

Mr. President, how long must we wait? : Alice Paul, Woodrow Wilson, and the fight for the right to vote Cover Image

American History Book Club Book #5

Alice Paul is an oft-ignored hero of American History, but her story receives new attention in Tina Cassidy's Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait?:  Alice Paul, Woodrow Wilson, and the Fight for the Right to VoteLearn about how the progressive reformer Woodrow Wilson tried to deal with politically active women.  An excellent book about the efforts that women made in order to vote.

Booked for Lunch

Today will be different

Today will be Different, by Marie Semple

Eleanor knows she's a mess. But today, she will tackle the little things. She will shower and get dressed. She will have her poetry and yoga lessons after dropping off her son, Timby. She won't swear. She will initiate sex with her husband, Joe. But before she can put her modest plan into action--life happens. Today, it turns out, is the day Timby has decided to fake sick to weasel his way into his mother's company. It's also the day Joe has chosen to tell his office--but not Eleanor--that he's on vacation. Just when it seems like things can't go more awry, an encounter with a former colleague produces a graphic memoir whose dramatic tale threatens to reveal a buried family secret. A hilarious, heart-filled story about reinvention, sisterhood, and how sometimes it takes facing up to our former selves to truly begin living.

The Booked for Lunch discussion group is held in the Brooks Room of the library and is facilitated by Library Director, Karen Demers.

Copies of the books are held at the Service Desk.
