April's Selection: The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Four mothers, four daughters, four families whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who's "saying" the stories. In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money. "To despair was to wish back for something already lost. Or to prolong what was already unbearable." Forty years later the stories and history continue

Levels Theatre presents CLUE - THE MUSICAL!

Performances are:
THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY
MAY 31, JUNE 1 and JUNE 2
at 8:00 p.m.

CLUE: THE MUSICAL brings the world's best-known suspects (Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White and Mr. Green) to life and invites the AUDIENCE to solve the mystery!  Just like the board game, at the start of the show, three cards are chosen to select the murderer, the weapon and the room in which the murder occurred -- then the audience (with the aid of a hard-nosed female detective and the deceased himself) has to try to figure out who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room and with what weapon. There are 216 possible solutions, so it's a different show every night!

Book by Peter DePietro
Lyrics by Tom Chiodo
Music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker & Vinnie Martucci
Based on the board game by Parker Brothers

Directed by Graham Slate-Grey
Choreography by Kate Smolens
Produced by Tyler Brechner
Set Design by Molly Racsko

Socrates Salon with Conversation Host Ron Gross
EMPATHY:  Its Power and Potential in Our Lives and Our Politics
What does empathy mean, to you?
·      How does empathy play a role in your life?
·      How do you practice empathy, and look for it from others?
·      How do we learn empathy?
    Are you an "Empath?"
·      What are the effects and consequences of empathy – or its absence?
What role does empathy play in our politics and civic life?

To stimulate your thinking:   Read the excellent  entry on Empathy at Wikipedia.org, covering the scientific, cultural, religious, and psychological knowledge about the subject.

Share your life experiences, knowledge, and wisdom about topics that matter, as we move from small talk to Big Talk. Everyone speaks and everyone listens, because all of us are wiser than any of us.  Topics announced in advance on flip chart at the Information Desk.  No registration required.
To receive further information about this session and ensuing ones, please send an e-mail to Ron Gross at grossassoc@aol.com

Please Note: The Salon will be held in the Community Room for this session.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is an internal form of martial art that is practiced for health and self defense.  Incorporating breathing with slow and fluid movements, the exercise connects the internal focus of the mind with the external control of the body.  Practicing Tai Chi ultimately leads to Improved Circulation, Better Balance, Greater Flexibility, Increased Energy and Reduced Tension.

Joseph has been practicing martial arts for more than 15 years.  He began his Tai Chi training in 1997 at Red Dragon Kung Fu Center under Sifu Rafael Gomez, and has been studying Tai Chi and Qigong extensively with Sifu Joseph Laracuenta since 2002.  “Our goal is to live a long and healthy life.  By focusing on ourselves we get to improve the quality of our life.  And by expressing that quality outward we get to improve the lives of others.” Joseph has also won numerous awards at the US Open Martial Arts Championship in Queens, NY, has performed Tai Chi at Citi Field, and has appeared as a guest on the Project Independence Radio Show 88.1FM WCWP.

Tai Chi is an internal martial art that is practiced for health and self defense.  It incorporates both slow moving exercise and stillness practice.  By connecting our breathing with our movements, we strengthen our ability to focus on each moment.
