February: 1984 by George Orwell

The year 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell's prophetic, nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of "negative utopia" -a startlingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel's hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions -a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

Register online or by phone at 516-466-8055 ext. 273. Copies of the book will be available to registered patrons for pick-up at the branch of their choice.

WHERE CAN WE PLACE OUR TRUST?

How “trusting” are you, in general?   Do you ever err in being too trusting, or not trusting enough – and in what kinds of situations?  Can you share a notable high or low point in your life-experiences of trusting in others?  How do we first  learn to trust? Where does our capacity to trust come from (Erik Erikson considered Trust to be  the first stage in every infant’s development.)   How does trust help us make life predictable, create a sense of community, and facilitate social and economic relationships?  What has happened to our trust in our institutions and public figures?  In our newspapers, magazines, and on TV?  When trust is lost, can it be regained?   If so, how?  How can we avoid misplaced trust, gullibility, credulity, and other weaknesses in how we place our trust.  (“In God we trust – all others pay cash.”  Do you have “Trust Issues” with the digital technologies you use, such as Identity Theft, Facebook, Fake News, Spamming, etc.

Share your life experiences, knowledge, and wisdom about topics that matter, as we move from small talk to Big Talk. Everyone speaks and everyone listens, because all of us are wiser than any of us.  Topics announced in advance on flip chart at the Information Desk. No registration required. To receive further information about this session and ensuing ones, please send an e-mail to Ron Gross at grossassoc@aol.com
