THE TEA GIRL OF HUMMINGBIRD LANE

By Lisa See

Led by SRPL Librarians Toni Ann Kaminski and Ellen Miller

Registration begins on Wednesday, December 19

Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea.  One day a jeep appears at the village gate and a stranger arrives. In this remote Yunnan village, the stranger finds the rare tea he has been seeking.  Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence. When she has a baby outside of wedlock, she wraps her daughter in a blanket, with a tea cake hidden in her swaddling, and abandons her in the nearest city.

While  Li-yan encounters modern life, her daughter grows up a privileged and well- loved girl in California.  Li-yan longs for her daughter and Haley wonders about her origins and both search and find answers in the tea that has shaped their family’s destiny for generations.

THE INVENTION OF WINGS by Sue Monk Kidd

This latest well researched novel set in the 1800’s by Sue Monk Kidd is inspired by the lives of Sarah Grimké, an abolitionist and suffragist who lived in Charleston, South Carolina and her personal maid, Handful. Sarah, the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, is an independent thinker who believes in equality for all. Handful is a slave in the Grimke household who displays a sharp intellect and a rebellious disposition. These two women bond and remain friends over the years, and both work in different ways to find their own versions of liberty. Kidd is a master storyteller who immerses the reader in the lives of these interesting women as they navigate family drama, slave revolts, the abolitionist movement and religion.

Led by SRPL Librarians Cathy Loechner and Yuan Zhang

Registration begins on Wednesday, January 16

THE RENT COLLECTOR

By Camron Steve Wright

Led by SRPL Librarians Susan Healy and Nirmala Bhattacharya

The Rent Collector, an historical novel, weaves a tale of survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly in their daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash heap. Life is hard and is also complicated by their chronically ill child, Nisay, with the added expense of medicines that are not working.

Sang Ly learns a secret about the rent collector who demands money from them - a secret that dates back to the Khmer Rouge and sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past.

This fact-based story is one of hope, of one woman's journey to save her son and another woman's chance at redemption. It sheds light on literacy and its power to change lives, illustrating how anyone can "rise from the ashes" in the most unlikely of places.

Registration begins on Wednesday, January 16
