TOULOUSE-LAUTREC AND THE STARS OF PARIS

With Inés Powell, Educator, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Exhibition at The Boston Museum of Fine Arts: April 6 - August 4, 2019

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec  captured the spectacle of modern Paris in evocative posters, prints and paintings. This exhibition explores his depictions of the stars and entertainments of Montmartre, a neighborhood of heady bohemian pleasure. Thematic sections highlight Toulouse-Lautrec’s formal innovations and the changing artistic and social landscapes of Paris, showcasing scenes of the city by day and night; cafés, cabarets and theaters; and celebrities of the age. The display also incorporates works by Edgar Degas, Honoré Daumier, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and others—presenting him in the context of his heroes, peers and followers.

Joan and Joe Castleman have been married for almost forty years. Joe is vain, laid back and relishes his public role as Great American Novelist while Joan pours her considerable charm and diplomacy into the private role of being the great man’s wife. Weaving together the past and present, THE WIFE intimately portrays the dynamic of a long-term marriage, a lifetime of shared secrets, betrayals and mutual love.

THE WHITNEY BIENNIAL

With Prof. Thomas Germano

The Whitney Biennial, May 17 – September 22, 2019 is a highly anticipated survey exhibition of art today. The co-curators have been visiting artists and alternative spaces throughout the United States over the past year in search of the most important, exciting, and relevant work. Taking the pulse of American culture and creativity, the Whitney Biennial is the Museum’s look at the state of contemporary art in the United States. With a venerable history of exhibiting the most stimulating artists—and often provoking debate—the Biennial, introduced by the Museum’s founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1932, is the longest-running continuous exhibition in the country to chart the latest developments in American art.

Registration is NOT required.

AUTHOR VISIT: SATURDAY'S CHILD BY DEBORAH BURNS

SATURDAY’S CHILD: A DAUGHTER’S MEMOIR

With Deborah Burns

Saturday's Child is a breakout memoir about growing up with an unconventional mother whose lifelong passion for socializing often resulted in her daughter being sidelined.  During the week Deborah spent time in a cramped city apartment where her father and two unmarried aunts raised her while her mom lived in an upstate resort that her family built. The memoir’s title refers to the fact that on Saturdays the author and her mom would spend time together shopping and eating ice cream. Author Burns recalls growing up in the shadow of her glamorous mother. Hailed as a must-read for every daughter who’s ever wondered where her mother ends and she begins, and by Kirkus Reviews as “Devilishly sharp … a masterful balance of psychological excavation and sumptuous description,” this debut is sure to be on everyone's list.

Registration is not required. All are welcome!

FIRST MAN brings to life the riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and the years 1961-1969.  Based on the intuitive, first-person account in the book by James R. Hansen, the movie probes one of the most dangerous missions in history, in particular the sacrifices and the cost placed on Armstrong and on the nation.
