Book Discussion (In Person) with Susan Healy The Dressmakers of Prospect Heights by Kitty Zeldis
A mesmerizing historical novel about three women in 1920s New York City and their life stories.

It's Brooklyn 1924 and Bea is a Russian immigrant who lived in New Orleans for twenty years before moving to New York City.  Alice is Bea's teenaged orphan ward, and together they run a successful, and chic, new dress shop. Living nearby, newlywed Catherine is restless in her elegant brownstone and longs for a baby she cannot conceive. When Bea befriends Catherine and they become close, Alice feels abandoned and runs off to Manhattan.  As the lives of the three women intersect, their tale of unexpected secrets will tell a story of maternal love, the unbreakable bonds between women, the families we are born into and those we choose, and the power of forgiveness.

Participants are encouraged to obtain ebook and audio versions through Libby or pick up a print copy at the Library beginning April 16.

The Musical World of Andre Rieu (Hybrid) with Richard Knox

Over the past four decades the Dutch violinist, conductor, and musical arranger Andre Rieu has thrilled audiences around the world with his large-scale theatrical performances of great classical and popular music.  After first creating the Maastricht Salon Orchestra in 1978 and then the waltz-based Johann Strauss Orchestra ten years later, Rieu’s fame as a musical artist and impresario soared.

Featuring a series of personal interviews and video clips from several of his best performances, this program will delve into Rieu’s background, his passion for the waltz as a musical art form, and his dedication to bringing the classics to a worldwide audience.

Programs shown as “Hybrid” may be presented in person or virtually in our Community Room.  Viewers may attend either in person or virtually.

Native Plants and Other Things Birds Look for in the Landscape (Virtual)

Native Plants and Other Things Birds Look for in the Landscape, and Why They Need to Be There With Joyann Cirigliano Senior Coordinator of Bird-Friendly Communities, Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center.

Many property owners and landscapers want to help the planet by adding native plants to their managed landscapes, but there can be some concern—certain native plants can look downright sloppy, which makes some of our two-legged neighbors rather unhappy. But it doesn’t have to be that way. If well-mannered plants with excellent habitat services are chosen, we can have both aesthetically. pleasing properties, and excellent environmental services. By blending aesthetics and ecology, with thoughtful consideration toward plant selection, habitat factors and gardening practices, landscapes that are both attractive and environmentally functional can be created. Please bring questions, curiosity, and an open mind.

Book Discussion with Lauren Glatt The Final Girl Support Group (In Person) by Grady Hendrix

In horror movies, the final girls are the ones left standing when the credits roll. They made it through the worst night of their lives…but what happens after?  Lynnette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, working to put their lives back together. Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece. Grady Hendrix’s novel is a fast-paced, frightening, and wickedly humorous thriller.

Participants are encouraged to obtain ebook and audio versions through Libby or pick up a print copy at the Library beginning May 1st.

Juneteenth (Virtual) Presented by Professor Bill Thierfelder

In June of 2021, President Joseph Biden signed a bill making June 19th—known as Juneteenth—a federal holiday. Although Juneteenth has been celebrated in African-American communities since its inception over a century and a half ago, many Americans only learned about it recently. This program explores the remarkable history behind this holiday, a day that celebrates the triumph of freedom over the unspeakable evils of slavery.

Dancing in the Dark: A History of Dance in the Movies (Hybrid) with Brian Rose

The movies and dancing are a partnership born in heaven. From its very beginnings, the new medium of motion pictures turned toward dance as one of best ways to showcase its unique ability to make movement come alive. And through the decades, it’s been dancing on the big screen that has provided some of the most ecstatic moments in film history—whether it’s Fred Astaire gliding on the ceiling in Royal Wedding, the Nicholas Brothers leaping down a staircase in Stormy Weather, Moira Shearer pirouetting through the dreamscape of The Red Shoes, or John Travolta burning up the dance floor in Saturday Night Fever. Illustrated with more than 75 video clips, this talk will survey 130 years of thrilling movie dance performances and demonstrate the extraordinary ways cinema brought dance to life.

Programs shown as “Hybrid” may be presented in person or virtually in our Community Room.  Viewers may attend either in person or virtually.

Cabaret (Virtual) with John Kenrick

While the contemporary American cabaret came into being in the 1970s, its traditions reach back more than a hundred years. A quick look at that tradition reveals a great deal about the social and cultural changes that marked the 20th Century. Since our primary focus is on cabaret's connection to musical theatre, film and television, we will concentrate on cabaret as it developed in New York City -- becoming a crucial training ground for writers and performers.

Broadway Overtures (Hybrid) with Richard Knox

The idea of using a symphonic introduction for a musical theater production had its roots centuries earlier when composers of grand opera decided to begin their works with a collection of musical motifs that allowed audiences to become acquainted with melodies that followed once the curtain was raised. This musical “foreshadowing” became a key ingredient in productions such as “Showboat”, “Oklahoma!”, “Guys and Dolls”, “My Fair Lady”, and “Gypsy”. The act of weaving one song into another within a narrow timeframe is an art unto itself and allows the composer to work independently of the lyricist to create an often-underappreciated component of the show.

During this program we will have an opportunity to watch symphonic orchestras perform the overtures to several classic Broadway musicals including the ones mentioned above. Be prepared for a wonderful experience reliving a host of melodies that have become an essential part of American music.

Dream Songs (Hybrid) Presented by Richard Knox

The subject of dreams and dreaming has been an essential ingredient in the history of music dating back centuries. Two excellent examples are Franz Lizst’s “Liebestraum” (Love Dream) and Robert Schumann’s “Traumerei” (Dreaming), both written for solo piano and an essential part of the Romantic Era repertoire. Around this time, America’s greatest 19 th century songwriter Stephen Foster continued this tradition with melodies such as “Beautiful Dreamer” and “(I Dream of) Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair”.  This program will, in addition to the aforementioned numbers, focus on a variety of more modern works with the same theme. We will have an opportunity to watch and listen to performances of such wonderful songs as “You Stepped Out of a Dream,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” “All Have to do is Dream,” “Daydream Believer,” and “Out of My Dreams.”

Sight and Sound (Hybrid) Presented by Richard Knox

The integration of montage and music and getting audiences emotionally invested in films. Having motion pictures be accompanied by music has been a tradition in Hollywood that goes back to the silent film era when pianos and organs were commonplace in theaters. Movie directors working closely with composers have continually attempted to enhance the audience involvement and enjoyment of their films by adding musical scores and specific motifs that help us identify with particular characters or which add an atmospheric tone to certain scenes. This program will examine how great directors such as Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lean, and William Wyler teamed with outstanding music composers such as John Williams,

Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, and Dmitri Tiomkin to make filmgoers laugh and cry or add the elements of fear or suspense while creating some of the most memorable motion pictures in the history of Hollywood.
