Traveling the New York City African-American Experience, 1623 -1830
Presented by Sherrill D. Wilson,Ph.D., Urban Anthropology

This slide presentation/lecture focuses on the people, places and events that highlight the history of the Africans’ presence in 17th and 18th century New York City. Enslaved Africans in 18th century New York City made up the 2nd largest group of enslaved people in colonial America, second only to Charleston South Carolina. The city’s role as a major port was instrumental in the business of selling human beings under both Dutch and British occupation. Locations such as the Slave Market at Wall Street, the National Monument NY African Burial Ground, Seneca Village and Harlem, all document the stories of Africans who helped to build New York City.

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Hemingway’s frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto is one of the greatest moments in literary history. A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was thirty years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain

Passionately argued, impressively researched, & filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie's birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the 20th century and explores its far-reaching effects.

Defending Jacob by William Landay.  Andy Barber has been assistant district attorney in a suburban New England town for over 20 years, when his 14 year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.
