What is a Kit State?
The word STATE is our way of describing the life cycle of a kit reservation. Each time that a Kit is used, it moves from one state to another, triggered by time or the movement of the Kit. There aren't just AVAILABLE or CHECKED OUT like a traditonal model. Our states tell us where they are sitting on a hold shelf, in transit, checked out, or awaiting maintenace. When KitKeeper is set up, we ask you what you want for your states, as in how many days do you need to get the kit ready to send, how long is check out, and how long doe sthe kit need to be ready to be checked out again. The whole process is designed to give libraries and users enough time to use the kit.
Here are the KitKeeper Use states:
SENDING
HOLDING
IN USE
RETURNING
MAINTENANCE
The number of days for each state can be adjusted at any time.
2 Kinds of States
There are 2 kinds of states when we're talking about kits. The first is the state that a particular kit is in at the present time. It might be sitting on a shelf at its HOME library. Or it might be waiting to be picked up by a patron. That is a state of type KIT.
The other state we use is the expected state of a particular kit on a particular date in the future. This is what we use when we're displaying the reservation calendar and is a state of type DATE. This state might be "AVAILABLE to be reserved" or "UNAVAILABLE following a booking so we can send it back to the HOME library". It doesn't mean that the kit is traveling now, it means that on the date in question, we expect the kit to be traveling.
To save space, we recognize that some states are very similar. For instance, when a patron actually has a kit, it has a KIT STATE of IN USE. And when we expect the patron to have the kit, we show the DATE STATE of IN USE on the calendar.
